What an amazing week for our Lions athletes! The boys golf team qualified for the Class 1B state tournament, while four girls and three relays and six boys and a relay qualified for the Class 1B state track and field championships May 25-28 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Girls golfer Makenna Kelpman also previously qualified for state.Boys golfThe Lions placed fourth overall Thursday at the Class 1B district golf tournament in Blaine. Senior Brayden Anderson was fifth, shooting a 92. Michael Kessel was 11th, Kellen Weedon was 14th. They will compete May 24-25 in Deer Park.
Boys track and field
The Lions placed seventh as a team at the district championships Thursday at Franklin Pierce. The 4×400-meter relay team made up of Micah Pitts, Forest Gray, Zachary McKnight and Ben Braun finished second in 3 minutes, 44.22 seconds. Gray was third in the triple jump at 38 feet, 3.25 inches and fifth in the high jump clearing 5-8. Josiah Mesler was fifth in the triple jump (38-0.25) and eight in the high jump (5-0), while Braun was fourth in the 400 (54.09) and seventh in the 200 (24.38), Pitts was seventh in the 400 (57.23) and Jadon Simpson was eighth in the 300 hurdles (47.07).
Girls track and field
The Lions placed fifth as a team at the district championships Thursday at Franklin Pierce. Freshman Meadowe Roberts won the district title in the 200, finishing in a time of 27.22 seconds. She was also second in the high jump, clearing 4-10 and setting the school record in the process. Emy Arbogast was second in the 100 hurdles (18.59), fifth in the high jump (4-6) and the triple jump (30-2.75) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (55.38). Emara Henderson was third in the discus (87-1) and sixth in the shot put (28-1). Three relays are advancing as well: the 4×100 made up of Mikayla Stephenson, Anna Edwards, Katherine Tkach and Roberts (3rd, 54.84), the 4×200 made up of Stephenson, Edwards, Stella Olson and Jersey McGehee (5th, 1:57.16), and the 4×400 made up of Stephenson, Edwards, Olson and McGehee (3rd, 4:48.21).
